The Oklahoma City Thunder took a commanding 1-0 lead following a 119-84 win in Game 1, covering their lofting spread as 13.5-point favorites to win. These two teams traded wins and losses throughout the regular season with OKC gaining the 3-2 edge, but Game 1 was all Thunder and their ruckus home crowd from the opening tip. They come in as even higher favorites to win by a nearly 20-point margin as oddsmakers put a ton of stock into them as the best team in the NBA Playoffs.

Keys to Suns vs. Thunder Matchup
While the Phoenix Suns had some momentum coming into Game 1 following multiple scoring outbursts from Jalen Green, their offense was widely held in-check against the No. 1 overall rated defense in the NBA all season. Devin Booker (23 pts) did all he could to match the game-high 25 points posted by ‘Clutch Player of the Year’ Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, but the Suns had 19 turnovers as a team and couldn’t string together buckets without halting their own rhythm through mistakes. Against a team like the Thunder who force an average of 17.0 turnovers per game, anything above that already high mark will likely result in a poor night for their opponents.

The Suns seemed to lack a definitive game plan early as they could have been heading into that game a bit drained following their two play-in games. They missed a three-pointer early into the opening possession and couldn’t get going on the subsequent possessions, allowing OKC to build an early lead and never look back. The Thunder have been difficult to claw back against and the Suns aren’t likely to overcome any large deficits, especially when OKC shoots 21-23 (91%) from the free-throw line.
While second-year forward Oso Ighodaro was able to notch a solid nine rebounds and three assists, he failed to record any points or blocks in relief of Mark Williams in the starting spot. Williams, listed as ‘questionable’ with a recurring foot injury, contributes with 11.7 PPG and adds a ton of athleticism around the rim for the Suns, so their interior stability certainly struggled without him on the floor. Unless one of their reserves can step up and combat the combo of Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein down low, the Suns may continue to struggled against the strong rebounding of the Thunder.
The Thunder don’t seem too concerned against the Suns, especially on their home floor, and it’s clear their effort on defense during these playoffs will extend to every player that hits the floor. They do a great job of locking Devin Booker up with double-teams and unless Jalen Green can get scorching hot from the field again, it doesn’t seem likely that the Suns will be a massive threat to the Thunder this series.
Suns vs. Thunder Game 2 Prediction and Pick
While we can expect the Suns’ efficiency to take a small jump from their previous 35% night from the field in Game 1, this Thunder defense has officially arrived in the playoffs and they’re playing at an insanely high rate. Unless Devin Booker, Jalen Green, and Dillon Brooks can all have a solid night scoring the ball, it doesn’t seem as though the Suns will be able to keep up against the best defense in the league.

The Thunder haven’t been very consistent against the spread this season given their lofty expectations and 18 points seems like a lot to be giving a Suns team that owns two wins against them this season. This may be a trap pick as the Suns should improve their numbers in Game 2, so we’ll side with Phoenix to cover the spread. OKC still wins big as this total should hit over.
Final Suns-Thunder Game 2 Prediction and Pick: Phoenix Suns +17.5 (-110); OVER 215.5 (-108)
