The Milwaukee Bucks are currently searching for their next head coach after the team parted ways with Doc Rivers shortly after the regular season ended. In addition to finding a new head coach, another key priority for the Bucks this offseason will be figuring out what the future holds for Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has seen his name mired in trade rumors for around a year.
Recently, Bucks forward Bobby Portis stopped by FanDuel’s “Run It Back” show to talk about his level of confidence that Antetokounmpo will still be on the team next year amid reporting from ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania that Milwaukee was meeting with Taylor Jenkins about the head coaching vacancy.
“Six, seven,” said Portis, referencing the viral meme, per Run It Back on X, formerly Twitter. “…I’m a spectator… I’m just waiting on the Shams report. I just want to hoop.”
Many expected that the Antetokounmpo saga would finally reach an end this past offseason at the trade deadline, but the team instead opted to keep him, with some wondering if they might just be delaying things until the summer, when teams are able to make more lucrative offers.
There is one school of thought that the NBA lottery could play a big role in what Milwaukee’s strategy will be. While the Bucks mathematically cannot get the number one pick, as they will be receiving the lesser of their own selection and that of the New Orleans Pelicans, they could still be in position to land an intriguing young prospect, depending on how the ping pong balls shake out.
In any case, it looks like it will be another rumor-filled offseason for the Bucks over the coming months. The draft lottery, meanwhile, is set for May 10.
