The Los Angeles Clippers enter the offseason at a crossroads after finishing 42–40 and missing the playoffs, a result that reinforces concerns about an aging, inconsistent roster. Rather than a full rebuild, the franchise is more likely to pursue a retool—keeping its core competitive while adding younger, more versatile contributors.
A key part of that strategy is identifying which role players must be retained. One player the Clippers should prioritize is Kris Dunn. Dunn has emerged as a defensive anchor, playing all 82 games and often guarding the opposing team’s best perimeter scorer. His ability to generate steals and disrupt offenses makes him a valuable two-way piece, especially given his relatively low contract value. Letting him walk to create cap space would likely weaken the team’s defensive identity without guaranteeing a better replacement.
Another player worth keeping is Terance Mann, who represents the type of athletic, flexible contributor the Clippers need more of. Mann’s versatility—capable of defending multiple positions and contributing offensively without demanding high usage—fits well alongside star players. As the team looks to get younger and more dynamic, players like Mann are essential glue pieces who can adapt to different lineups and playoff-style basketball.
On the other hand, the Clippers may need to consider letting a veteran walk, particularly Russell Westbrook. While Westbrook brings energy and playmaking, his fit within a slower, star-driven offense has been inconsistent. Reports and analysis suggest the team may benefit from reallocating minutes and resources toward younger guards or more efficient shooters. Moving on from Westbrook could also open financial flexibility to address other roster needs, such as perimeter shooting and frontcourt depth.
Ultimately, the Clippers do not need a complete overhaul, but they cannot simply “run it back.” Retaining key role players like Dunn and Mann while moving on from less optimal fits such as Westbrook would represent a practical step toward building a more balanced and competitive team for the 2026–27 season.
