Cooper Flagg is the 2026 NBA Rookie of the Year. Despite detractors, contrasting opinions, and the combative ballots of 44 individuals who took their 1st place vote elsewhere. Flagg came out on top. In what was an absolutely astonishing Rookie season for the ‘Maine Event’, the only thing baffling about this outcome is that there were doubters. Starting the season at age 18, Flagg made statements by shattering records, printing posters on opposing players, and sending blocks into the 300 section. Cooper Flagg’s ROTY status is wholly deserved, and the contrary would have been an injustice.
This award, however, represents more than just his on-court achievements. Over the course of a season, Flagg has reanimated the corpse of the Dallas Mavericks franchise. Those who were disillusioned by the Nico Harrison regime, faulty ownership, bad trades, and rumors of relocation have had their faith restored by this young superstar. Flagg brought the Mavericks back from the brink.
How ROTY Winner Cooper Flagg Did The Impossible
The Weight Of History On Cooper Flagg’s Rookie Season
The story of the Dallas Mavericks over the last 18 months would make a fantastic movie, and many fans may wish it were fiction. In reality, you can’t make this stuff up. When Luka Doncic was traded from the Mavericks, it sent a shockwave through the league. Nobody saw it coming, and there will likely never be a trade of that magnitude again. It was unjustifiable. It ruined the poetry and charm of the Mavericks franchise. A world-class, take-over scorer from Europe who cooks everyone in sight, leading the team into battle. Doncic took the torch from Dirk Nowitzki, and the fairytale should have continued. Instead, Harrison set the storybook ablaze.
It was a trial by fire for Flagg at the beginning of the season. The brutal conflict between the front office and the fans still burned bright. It wasn’t until the firing of Harrison that it eventually subsided, but that never took away from his shine. Initially, alongside an injury-prone Anthony Davis, and eventually, alongside no Davis at all, Flagg had a boulder to push uphill. Kyrie Irving sat out the year with an injury, starters were underperforming, and offseason gambles didn’t pay off. But the sure thing did.
The Mavericks Have Moved On
Every record he broke, every iconic moment, Flagg did the impossible. After a tumultuous period for the franchise, the ship has been steadied. While he plays like a veteran on the court, his off-court mindset is underrated. Ignore the noise, work with what you have, and ball out all night, every night. It was by chance that the Mavs got their star man, but it was by pure determination that he justified his hype.
Averaging 21 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists over 70 games, he is clearly generational. To do all this despite adversity and not let outside influences taint his talent is admirable. The stat sheet would be enough to justify his Rookie of the Year triumph, but his composure is on a Hall of Fame trajectory. Dallas didn’t just get the player that they needed. They got the man to unite Mavs nation once again. The most astonishing feat of all is that he achieved something thought impossible after the Doncic trade. He got fans excited again.
