The Orlando Magic explored a potential blockbuster trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo prior to the deadline, according to a report from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, highlighting the organization’s aggressive approach to roster building as it continues its postseason push.
Scotto reported that Orlando expressed interest in acquiring the Milwaukee Bucks superstar earlier in the season, signaling a willingness to pursue a major move even after completing a high-profile trade for Desmond Bane.
“A few months prior, with heightened expectations entering the season after making a blockbuster trade to acquire Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies, Orlando explored making another huge splash. The Magic expressed interest in trading for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo before the trade deadline, league sources told HoopsHype.”
While the extent of discussions between Orlando and the Milwaukee Bucks remains unclear, the report reinforces the Magic’s intent to accelerate their timeline around a young core led by Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.
The interest in Antetokounmpo aligns with the philosophy of Orlando’s front office, led by president Jeff Weltman and senior advisor John Hammond, who originally drafted the two-time MVP in 2013 while with Milwaukee. Both executives have long prioritized length, versatility and size in constructing competitive rosters.

Despite the intrigue of a potential deal, Orlando faced limitations in assembling a viable trade package. Following the Bane acquisition, the Magic lacked significant draft capital, though their roster features several young players who could have appealed to Milwaukee in hypothetical negotiations.
The report also follows earlier speculation from former Bucks player Charlie Villanueva, who said earlier in April that he believed Antetokounmpo could ultimately land in Orlando in a deal involving Banchero. While Villanueva’s comments were speculative, they added to growing leaguewide chatter linking the two franchises.
For Milwaukee, the decision to retain Antetokounmpo came amid widespread interest across the league. The organization has since made internal changes, including hiring Taylor Jenkins as head coach after parting ways with Doc Rivers, and continues to evaluate its direction following a disappointing season.
Meanwhile, Orlando remains focused on its immediate postseason opportunity. The Magic hold a 3-1 series lead over the Detroit Pistons and will look to close out the series in Game 5 on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. ET on Prime Video. A victory would mark the franchise’s first series win since 2010 and make Orlando just the seventh No. 8 seed in league history to advance.
As the Magic pursue a deep playoff run, the reported interest in Antetokounmpo underscores the organization’s willingness to explore transformative moves while continuing to build around its emerging core.
