Charlotte Hornets guard Coby White expressed his strong desire to remain with the franchise during an interview on April 30, 2026, as he approaches unrestricted free agency this summer. White, who was acquired from the Chicago Bulls in February, cited the team’s environment and culture as primary reasons for wanting to stay in North Carolina.

The 26-year-old combo guard is eligible for a three-year, $52.4 million extension before the free agency period officially begins on June 30. Despite a persistent calf injury that delayed his debut, White appeared in 21 games for Charlotte, averaging 15.6 points, three rebounds, and three assists per contest.

“Obviously, love it here,” White said in a conversation with Roderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer. “I think first off, just the people. They create a fun environment. They create an environment to where every day you come in here, you look forward to it.”

Timberwolves Eliminate Nuggets in Game 6 Playoff Upset

White posted efficient shooting splits of 46.1% from the field and 39.1% from three-point range during his stint with the Hornets. Combined with his time in Chicago, he finished the 2025-26 season with an overall average of 17.4 points per game.

Hornets general manager Jeff Peterson told reporters that the organization envisioned White as a long-term piece when they initially traded for him. Peterson noted his excitement for White to have a full offseason with the coaching staff to prepare for the 2026-27 campaign.

Analyst Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report argued that retaining the University of North Carolina product is critical for maintaining the momentum Charlotte built late in the season. Prior to his injury concerns, league analysts projected White could command between $25 million and $30 million annually on the open market.

The Hornets missed the 2026 playoffs but intend to build around a core featuring LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, and Kon Knueppel. White indicated that the team’s style of play benefits his skill set and that he feels landing in Charlotte was part of a larger plan for his career.
