The Portland Trail Blazers have turned their attention to the offseason after their playoff run came to an end last week against the San Antonio Spurs. The Blazers are eagerly awaiting the return of point guard Damian Lillard, who reunited with the franchise last offseason but missed the entire 2025-26 campaign as he rehabbed his torn Achilles.
With Lillard returning, some have wondered what that could mean for the future of point guard Jrue Holiday, and recently, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on Portland’s plan in that regard.
“…team officials believe the two veterans can function together nicely. Lillard and Holiday are likewise said to maintain a strong connection after playing in the Tokyo Olympics together,” reported Fischer on Marc Stein’s Substack.
However, Fischer still didn’t rule out the possibility of Portland looking to make a move.
“Isn’t it conceivable that the Blazers would seek to create more backcourt opportunity for (Scoot) Henderson, whom they selected with the No. 3 overall pick just three years ago, by shipping out Holiday?” he wondered.
In a vacuum, it would make sense that the Blazers would be interested in seeking return packages for Holiday in order to pave the way for Lillard and Henderson to have maximum opportunity next year. The veteran guard still has plenty left to offer, as evidenced by his performance in the series against the Spurs, when he often looked like the most consistent Blazers player on the floor.
However, Holiday brings a level of defense that isn’t present with Lillard and Henderson, which could motivate the team to want to keep him around, even if it means there will be a bit of a logjam in the backcourt for the time being.
