The San Antonio Spurs dropped Game 1 of their Western Conference Semifinal series of the NBA playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves following a 104-102 loss on Monday. The Spurs have been pegged as a potential challenger to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the West this season, but after their Game 1 loss, count Kendrick Perkins as one who is changing his tune.

During a recent segment of ‘First Take,’ the former NBA player turned ESPN analyst exclaimed that he does not foresee the Spurs winning this series.

“I know I picked the San Antonio Spurs to win the championship, but I’m gonna say right now that I was wrong,” Perkins said. “And I’m gonna take all the heat that comes with it because they’re not going to win this series … I know when a team has that ‘it’ factor. The Minnesota Timberwolves, they got that ‘it’ factor.”

The Spurs obviously have a chance to even the series in Game 2 before it shifts to Minnesota for Games 3 and 4. The Spurs have been a good road team in the playoffs so far as well, sweeping both road games against the Portland Trail Blazers in the opening round.

But this is a Wolves team that is brimming with confidence and was energized by the return of Anthony Edwards from a knee injury he sustained in the team’s opening round series against the Denver Nuggets.

Spurs star Victor Wembanyama had a triple double in the loss with 11 points, 15 rebounds and 12 blocked shots. He shot only 5-of-17 from the field, however, including 0-of-8 from the 3-point line.

The Spurs will look to even the series up in Game 2 which is scheduled for Wednesday.
