ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — The Atlanta Hawks on Sunday learned where they’ll be drafting in next month’s NBA draft.
The Hawks landed the No. 8 overall pick, while the Washington Wizards secured the No. 1 selection.
Atlanta entered the lottery with a 30% chance of landing at No. 8 and a combined 40% chance of moving into the top four. The Hawks acquired the pick after trading back from No. 13 to No. 23 in last year’s NBA Draft and receiving an unprotected first-round pick from the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Pelicans finished with the league’s second-worst record this past season, initially giving Atlanta favorable lottery odds. The Hawks also owned a pick swap that allowed them to take the better selection between the Pelicans’ and Milwaukee Bucks’ first-round picks.
That selection ultimately came from New Orleans. Milwaukee will pick at No. 10.
Atlanta also owns another first-round pick at No. 23 overall, acquired from the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Analysts have labeled this upcoming draft class as one of the strongest since the 1990s. Top prospects are expected to include BYU’s AJ Dybantsa, Kansas’ Darryn Peterson, Duke’s Cameron Boozer and North Carolina’s Caleb Wilson.
