If you’re familiar with the discography of Rick Ross, you’re probably familiar with the first song on his fourth album, Teflon Don, entitled “I’m Not a Star.”

Knicks’ Jalen Brunson says he’s ‘not a star’

Brunson is probably familiar with it, because when he was referred to as a “star” during a media session ahead of the Eastern Conference finals, that was his response.

When he was asked how, as a star, he’s been able to adapt to a more off-the-ball role in New York’s offense during their current postseason run, Brunson was short and direct.

“One, I’m not a star,” he said. “Two, I want to win.”

Technically, the quote is more fun if you imagine him saying it in Rick Ross’ voice.

Anyway, while it’s admirable for Brunson to show such humility. he’s objectively incorrect. He’s clearly a star, and probably one of the bigger ones in the entire NBA, due in large part to the market he plays in. As one the best Knicks players in recent memory, Brunson has assuredly achieved star status.

He’ll achieve even more star status if he’s able to lead the Knicks to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. The Knicks will face off against the winner of the series between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons in the conference finals.
