Former Saint Louis forward Kalu Anya has committed to Virginia out of the transfer portal, according to On3.com.

The 6-foot-8 Worcester, Massachusetts, native redshirted last season, but averaged 6.5 points, a team-leading 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists a game for the Billikens in 2024-25.

Anya played his first two seasons for Brown, averaging 9.6 points and 7.4 rebounds in 2023-24 and 8.2 points and 6.2 rebounds in 2022-23.

W&M’s Dingledine named CAA Rookie of the Year

William & Mary freshman Talon Dingledine became the first Tribe men’s golfer to be named the CAA Rookie of the Year.

The Chesterfield native leads the Tribe with a stroke average of 72.03, the best in school history for a freshman. He has finished in the top 10 in seven of W&M’s 10 events, including two top-fives.

Dingledine was the runner-up at the Coastal Athletic Association championship tournament at 9-under 207. He was a second-team All-CAA selection.

UVA women advance to NCAA Championships

The Virginia women’s team will make its fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Championships after advancing from a three-team playoff for the final two positions Wednesday at the Chapel Hill Regional.

Jaclyn LaHa birdied her final hole to put the Cavaliers in a tie for fourth place at 18-over 858 with Michigan State and NC State. The top five teams in each regional advanced. Virginia and Michigan State claimed the final two spots following the playoff.

Texas, North Carolina and Oklahoma State were the top three teams in the regional.

Individually, LaHa tied for 10th at even-par.

In the Louisville Regional, Virginia Tech finished sixth and missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships. The Hokies’ Emily Mathews and Banthita Phoncharatkun each finished tied for 20th at 1 under. Old Dominion’s Barbara Car tied for 38th at 5 over.

The NCAA Championships will be held May 22-27 in Carlsbad, California.

Apprentice wins twice to stay in USCAA World Series

Apprentice School (38-6) won twice Wednesday to remain in contention at the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Small College World Series, improving to 3-1 at the tournament in DuBois, Pennsylvania.

After going 1-1 on the first two days, Apprentice ousted United States Sports University of Daphne, Alabama, 14-8, then knocked out Penn State DuBois 4-1.

Against USSU, the Builders fell behind 5-0 in the top of the first but led 9-6 after a five-run third. Pitcher Charley Higginbotham (7-1) persevered through 5 1/3 innings for the victory.

Nate Yeary was 2 for 4 with four runs, Isaac McCallister was 1 for 2 with two runs and four RBIs, Jett Winslow was 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs, Baker Green was 2 for 4 with a run and two RBIs, and Jackson Thomas was 2 for 5 with three RBIs.

McCallister’s three-run homer tied the score at 6, and Yeary’s RBI bunt hit gave Apprentice the lead for good.

Against DuBois, Grant Stratton pitched a seven-inning five-hitter, striking out 10 and walking one. The Builders scored single runs in four innings.

Yeary was 2 for 2 with a run, McCallister and Lucca Pascarella hit home runs, and Winslow was 1 for 3 with a run.
Apprentice will play another elimination game at 2:30 p.m. Thursday against the top-seeded Salem Tigers (35-18) of Nutter Fort, West Virginia.

• Cole Raile went 4 for 5 with a homer and five RBIs as VMI defeated Norfolk State 15-5 in baseball Tuesday night in Lexington. Thomas Ealey drove in a pair of runs for the Spartans (19-29).

• RJ Hamilton and Micharl DiMartini drove in four runs each as Duke downed William & Mary 14-9 in baseball Tuesday night in Durham, North Carolina. Charlie Iriotakis went 3 for 3 with two RBIs for the Tribe (21-29).

• Eight Christopher Newport men’s lacrosse players have earned All-America honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine. Mason Bellinger, Brett Kelley and Jamie Smith picked up first-team honors, while Kevin Miller and Daniel Siaton were on the second team. Colin DeGrassi, Rory Keverline and Jackson Platner gained honorable mention.

• Christopher Newport women’s lacrosse players Brookelyn Morrison and Gabby Saia collected All-America honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine. Morrison earned first-team accolades, while Saia was a third-team selection.

• Christopher Newport women’s tennis players Kendal Chang and Samantha Robertson have earned spots on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. Also, CNU men’s tennis player Vincent Truong made the team for the third straight year.
