When did the tradition of wearing traditional white uniforms at home fade away in the NBA?

A longtime tradition in the NBA and college basketball is that the home team always wears white, forcing the road team to wear something different.
The decision dates back to black-and-white television, when “color vs. color” games, such as blue-versus-red uniforms, were discouraged to prevent viewer confusion. However beginning with the 2017-18 season, the NBA allowed the home team to choose any uniform. The League also worked with Nike, its apparel provider, to eliminate the “home” and “away” uniform designations altogether during the same season.

The result has been two-fold. Nike’s deal with the NBA allowed them to flood the market with more alternate uniforms and colorways. Home teams also began wearing white at home way less often.
Per Yahoo’s Kevin O’Connell, the home team has worn white in only 22 of 66 NBA playoff games so far this year. Back in the 2016 NBA postseason, home teams wore white in 83 of 86 games, including every round two, Conference Finals & Finals game. That’s a 64 percent difference in the span of a decade.

“I think this is a mistake by the NBA. I think it’s a mistake by Nike. I think the tradition aspect matters,” O’Connell opined on his podcast this week. “I think to be able to turn on the game and immediately know who’s playing, you identify jerseys with teams. You can have all the fun you want during the regular season, even during the playing and during the first round. Have all the fun you want. From there on forward, I think the home team’s going to be wearing white except for some rare occasions.”

Houston’s traditional white uniforms
To drive this point home, the Houston Rockets opted to wear red during both home games against the Los Angeles Lakers this postseason. In Game 3, the Rockets’ red uniforms were paired against the Lakers’ yellows, in Game 4, the Rockets’ red contrasted against the Lakers’ “Sunday whites”—in honor of Chick Hearn—even though Houston gets to dictate the terms. The Rockets wore their white uniforms on the road in Game 2 and Game 5.
In last year’s postseason against the Golden State Warriors, the Rockets memorably wore their white jerseys in a Game 7 loss at home, but they were in their alternate “City Edition” jerseys.

In fact, the last time the Rockets wore their traditional white uniforms at home was on March 21 against the Miami Heat. What’s notable is that the Rockets played six more home games after their 123-122 win over the Heat, but four of them were in their white “Dunkstronaut” alternate uniforms, and two were either in red or black.
Longtime basketball critic Ethan Strauss recognizes that uniform choice is something that will easily rile up his audience.
“If someone asked me what subject results in more reader mail than you might expect, it’s uniforms,” Strauss wrote in his newsletter in 2024, which has nearly 40,000 subscribers. “Many sports fans are sick of leagues trying to revolutionize jerseys and they lack an outlet that’ll listen to this seemingly niche complaint. It’s gotten worse in part because the launching of a new uniform now makes for an instant, easy write-up from media outlets, incentivizing PR-hungry franchises to tinker further.

“I, for one, share this fan frustration. From the MLB to the NBA, to college programs trying to make a splash with garish designs, these institutions seem to reject the basic value proposition of being visually familiar.”
Who matters most in uniform selection?
Being visually familiar is important to many who consume the NBA on television or in person at an arena. However, at least when watching my cousins and nephews’ countless hours on the game, many fans who play NBA 2K, the league’s official simulation video game franchise, choose to wear a team’s alternate or throwback uniforms rather than the traditional ones offered.

What does this mean for teams like the Rockets? It’s clear that wearing the traditional home whites isn’t a priority for the organization or Nike, but it’s difficult to determine whether that is good or bad for the franchise. Rumors persist that a new uniform set could be in the works for the Rockets starting in the 2026-27 season, which could motivate the team to wear their home whites more often.

The Rockets did not respond to a request for comment on new uniforms as of Friday.
It’s clear that the push for more uniforms and alternate looks isn’t going away anytime soon, with Nike leading design for the league’s 30 teams, but tradition can still be a thing in today’s sporting world. Even in the postseason, especially when the games matter most, the last thing anyone needs to worry about is distinguishing which team is which based on the uniforms they wear on the court.

Especially when the solution is simple—the home team wears white.
