AJ Dybantsa has entered the 2026 NBA Draft as the consensus favorite to become the No. 1 overall pick. And with the Washington Wizards winning the No. 1 pick after a 17-65 season, most have accepted the fact that the potentially generational star is heading to Washington to become the face of the organization.

Still, the 2026 class is viewed as historically deep, with the likes of Cameron Boozer, Darryn Peterson and Caleb Wilson all viewed as potential No. 1 picks. Still, out of 10 executives that The Athletic quizzed, seven believe that Washington would be ill-advised to choose anyone other than Dybantsa.

“Take AJ and sleep like a baby,” one of the seven respondents said.

Further, according to the executive, the worst-possible outcome for a 19-year-old would be to have a career similar to Andrew Wiggins, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 draft. While Wiggins did not have the kind of generational career most No. 1 picks are touted to have, he has still been successful and took no time to settle down in the league.

Wiggins won the Rookie of the Year award back in 2015 after averaging 16.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists in his first year with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He has since produced three full seasons averaging more than 20 points per game and won the championship back in 2022 with the Golden State Warriors.

Still, Wiggins to date has one All-Star appearance, something Dybantsa will be looking to exceed. The BYU freshman led the nation in scoring at 25.5 points per game while carrying his team’s offense after Richie Saunders suffered a season-ending injury midway through the year.

A scorer at all three levels, Dybantsa’s combination of skill and scoring has led to comparisons with the likes of DeMar DeRozan and Kevin Durant. His ceiling on both ends of the floor is considered generational, and the Wizards look extremely likely to pick him, considering the hype.
