CONCORD, N.C. (WBTV) – A former NC State basketball player was hired as the next head coach at a Charlotte-area school this week.
West Cabarrus High School in Concord announced on Monday, May 18, that it hired Ishua Benjamin to lead its men’s basketball team.
Benjamin — who is from Concord — played for the Wolfpack from 1994-1998. During that span he played 118 games for NC State, including 99 starts. A guard, Benjamin averaged a solid 10.7 points per game, and was an ACC All-Freshman choice in 1995.
He left NC State seventh in school history in assists and fourth in steals. Only seven players have logged more minutes for the Wolfpack than the new West Cabarrus coach.
Benjamin has prior head-coaching experience at Cary Academy in Wake County.
Now back in Cabarrus County, the 50-year-old coach has returned to the area where he first made a name for himself.
Before he played collegiately for the Wolfpack, Benjamin starred at Concord High School in the early 1990s.
He earned all-state honors as a senior at Concord, and was named a fourth-team All-American by “Parade Magazine.” He led his team to the semifinals in the state playoffs that year.
Benjamin will inherit a West Cabarrus team that went 16-12 in the 2025-2026 season, and advanced to the second round of the 7A state playoffs.
