The Dallas Mavericks are in the business of finding a new head coach after recently firing Jason Kidd, and they seem to have a few candidates in mind. One of the coaches they have interest in is Jon Scheyer, but it seems like they may not be able to get him, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.

“Spurs assistant Sean Sweeney is expected to draw serious interest from the Mavericks after they parted ways with Jason Kidd, league sources told ClutchPoints. Dallas is also expected to reach out to Duke HC Jon Scheyer, but he is committed to his current position, sources said,” Siegel wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Scheyer has had success with Duke as their head coach, and there’s no surprise that he would rather stay with them instead of taking his talents to the Mavericks. At the same time, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he wanted to come to the Mavericks to coach Flagg, whom he had coached last season with Duke.

The Mavericks still have a few candidates on their mind, such as Sweeney and Micah Nori, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

“The top candidates to replace Kidd were not immediately apparent Tuesday night, but San Antonio’s Sean Sweeney and Minnesota’s Micah Nori — widely regarded around the league as future head coaches — are both known quantities in Dallas. Sweeney was the lead assistant on Kidd’s staff for the first four of his five seasons before Sweeney left to become associate head coach in San Antonio; Nori worked with Ujiri in Toronto during Ujiri’s first of two stints with the Raptors,” Stein wrote.

It’s obvious from the list of candidates that the Mavericks have an interest in are people who are future head coaches who can lead a young team.

With Cooper Flagg considered the face of the franchise, any young coach may have an interest in coming to the Mavericks.
