The New Orleans Pelicans’ search for a new head coach came to an end this week after the organization hired Jamahl Mosley following his dismissal as head coach of the Orlando Magic after the team was eliminated in the playoffs by the Detroit Pistons. Pelicans executive Joe Dumars reached out to Mosley immediately after the Magic were eliminated, but the process took a little longer at Mosley’s behest, as per Pelicans Film Room.

“I thought Jamahl was moving on to the second round. When they lost, only then did I reach out to him. They next day after they lost, I reached out to him,” Dumars said. “I texted him, ‘should we have a conversation.’ He said, ‘yeah, just give me a day or two though, I’m just trying to breathe right now though.’ That was the first time I reached out to him. We never talked before that.”
Joe Dumars was responding to a report suggesting that he had contact with Jamahl Mosley about becoming the Pelicans’ head coach before the Magic were eliminated from the postseason. But in any case, the team has their new coach as they head into a potentially crucial offseason as they look to get back into playoff contention.
Mosley joins the Pelicans after spending the past five seasons as head coach of the Magic. During that time, he compiled an overall record of 189-221. He led the Magic to the postseason in three out of five seasons, but they were unable to advance past the opening round each time.
