NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The New Orleans Pelicans will introduce Jamahl Mosley as their new head coach Tuesday, beginning a new chapter for a franchise trying to reset after missing the postseason for a second straight season.
Mosley, who spent the past five seasons as head coach of the Orlando Magic, was hired after Orlando fired him earlier this month following a seven-game, first-round playoff loss to the Detroit Pistons. The Pelicans’ introductory press conference is scheduled for noon Tuesday.
Mosley went 189-221 with Orlando. His teams made the NBA playoffs in each of the past three seasons and won the Southeast Division twice, but were eliminated in the first round each time.
The hire ends James Borrego’s bid to keep the job on a permanent basis. Borrego served as interim coach for 70 games after the firing of Willie Green, taking over a 2-10 team and finishing 24-46.
Borrego said after the regular season that he wanted to stay in New Orleans and believed he could build a more consistent winner with a full offseason in charge. Dumars said Borrego was a candidate, but that the team would also look “outside the building.”
Mosley becomes the Pelicans’ third coach since Dumars took over as executive vice president of basketball operations.
He takes over a roster led by Zion Williamson, Trey Murphy and Dejounte Murray. New Orleans also added guard Jeremiah Fears and forward Derik Queen in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft.
