One question for the New Orleans Pelicans this offseason is whether or not they will look to trade some of their intriguing pieces after another disappointing 2025-26 season. One of those names is Trey Murphy III, who brings elite shooting and defensive versatility, both of which are traits that every NBA team is currently looking for.
Recently, Bill Simmons of The Ringer floated some potential teams he sees as suitors for the talented wing’s services.
“We assume he’s probably going to get traded over the next three weeks. I think Boston is a possibility. We thought whoever lost this matchup (Spurs and Thunder) is a possibility. You have two to three weeks to trade for someone like that,” said Simmons, per on his podcast, per Garland Gillen of FOX 8 (WVUE-TV) on X, formerly Twitter.
The Oklahoma City Thunder will be expected to make at least some moves this offseason after falling short in Game 7 against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night. The lack of shooting and playmaking around Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, especially with Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell out of the lineup, was a glaring issue in that series.
Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics also need an upgrade on the perimeter after some of their unsung heroes from the regular season predictably fell short in the playoffs, when Boston choked a 3-1 lead to the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round.
It remains to be seen how much a team would be willing to give up for Murphy III, but his rangy wingspan, athleticism, and seemingly unlimited shooting range make him a premier archetype for the current state of the league, and with their playoff losses, it wouldn’t be a shocker to see the Celtics and Thunder try to get aggressive on the trade market this offseason.
