Jayson Tatum has taken over the headlines after making a spectacular return to postseason action following nearly a year away. With his resurgence, the Boston Celtics cruised past the Philadelphia 76ers 123–91 in Game 1 of the first round on Sunday.
Boston now holds a 1–0 series lead, but despite the dominant victory, Tatum made it clear in his post-game press conference that he is not underestimating Philadelphia. He explained that the 76ers have a unique roster construction, calling them an extremely talented and well-coached team led by championship-winning coach Nick Nurse.

“Philly has had guys in some time that they’re not really a traditional set up,” Tatum said. “They’re a really, really talented team. Great coaching staff, Nick Nurse is a championship coach. I played against him in the bubble when he was at his prime. So just understanding they’re a really complete team. And obviously, they’re missing Joe well. But they just got some really talented guys, some guys that play hard.
“And so you have to show them that respect. Knowing that they’re gonna play better next game, next game’s gonna be tougher. They’re gonna make adjustments and just preparing for that. I think they’re gonna make adjustments and just preparing for that next game.”

Tatum finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. In the first half alone, he poured in 21 points, along with eight rebounds and four assists. With the performance, he became the youngest player in NBA history to reach 2,500 career playoff points and 1,000 playoff rebounds.

Game 1 marked Tatum’s first playoff appearance since rupturing his right Achilles tendon in May 2025. He spoke candidly about the emotional significance of the moment. in his post-game press conference.
“It’s an incredible feeling,” Tatum said. “You know, not too long ago, I wasn’t even sure if I was going to be able to play this season, let alone get an opportunity to play in the playoffs.”
“Today was probably the most excited and like relaxed and grateful I’ve been about, you know, my nine years of being in the playoffs. I’m just super happy to be able to be out here and play.”

Tatum also shared pride for the way the Celtics led the game against the 76ers.
“Playoffs is about making things tough,” Tatum said. “You can’t stop everything… but I was proud of the way that we started the game especially on the defensive end and it just kind of continued to carry over.”
Tatum’s health and chemistry with Jaylen Brown have made Boston strong to win the series, while the 76ers continue to navigate the absence of Joel Embiid. The Celtics will host Philadelphia again for Game 2 on Tuesday.
