CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers have made a major decision in the front office as they now move forward under the guidance of new President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey. The Sixers brought in Gansey to replace Daryl Morey, who held the same position for six seasons before the team parted ways with him.

Gansey has spent the previous 14 years with the Cleveland Cavaliers, including the last four seasons as the team’s GM, and will now look to help the Sixers move forward. With the June 23 draft approaching, the Sixers hold the No. 22 pick, and Gansey, who ran the draft in Cleveland, will be joining a Sixers team that has drafted well in the past, with Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe as big examples.

“The group right here, I mean, they’ve drafted really, really well, obviously,” Gansey explained. “I’m excited to learn from them, and obviously put my vision and put my input on the draft, but I think at 22, you want to get a combination of best player available and fit with our roster. So, we’re going to dive into that the next two weeks and try to get the best person and player for the Sixers.”

Bob Myers, who led the search before deciding on Gansey, is confident that even though this is late in the draft process, Gansey will help this group make the right decision. The Cavs hold the No. 29 pick in the draft so he has seen some of these players in the range of 22.

“The good news is he’s seen all these guys, and they’re somewhat in the range,” Myers added. “I think the Cavs are 29 so it’s not like he’s sitting there going, I don’t know any of these guys are, and also he ran a draft, but the work he’s going to do, and has been doing, is how does this group draft, right? How much do we use analytics here as compared to what he came from? How much does he lean on those things? How much is it the scout’s voice? How much does Nick Nurse get a voice? So it’s really getting an understanding of, ‘OK, we did it this way in Cleveland. How do you guys do it?’ And working together with this group.”

With that being said, the draft isn’t the only way to build a roster, obviously. The Sixers will look to make things happen in free agency and even in the trade market depending on what they see. Gansey has a standard of what he wants to add to the roster and will not move off that.

“I want guys that want to be in Philly first and foremost,” Gansey said succinctly. “Obviously, guys that can fit around our players that we have currently under contract, and I want fountains, not drains. I want guys with high character, guys with high work ethics, and guys that want to be in Philadelphia.”

There’s more than that, even. It’s obvious that Gansey has a plan of attack heading into the summer and how he wants to build this roster when understanding of who’s still playing in the finals at the moment.

“I think with where we’re at now, we have pick 22 in the draft, we got to hit on that,” Gansey finished. “We got to get a good player there. Just building depth. We got to get guys in here in free agency that we like, we got to get minimum guys. Then the big part is just internal development. Tyrese, VJ, and some of our other young guys, like, they got to get better, too. I think it’s internal growth, 22, and then free agency, and trying to add as much depth as we can to the roster.”
