Expect major traffic in San Antonio this weekend. Two high-profile events will happen next door to each other at around the same time, bringing thousands to the city’s downtown area.
Both Spacecon and the NBA Finals Game 5 are taking place on Saturday, June 13. The sci-fi celebration is headed to the Freeman Coliseum, while the basketball match against the New York Knicks is scheduled next door at the Frost Bank Center.
Created by PMX Events, Spacecon runs from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. It’s known for bringing attendees’ favorite shows to life through various panels and activities. Several ticket-holders decide to dress up and purchase passes that include an autograph or photo with celebrity guests. This time around, the lineup features Tom Hiddleston (“Loki”), John Cena, and Hayden Christensen (“Star Wars”), among others. The festival begins on Friday, June 12, and continues through Sunday, June 14.
Visitors are encouraged to get to the arena via Rideshare or VIA Bus to avoid traffic and parking delays, according to Spacecon’s website. Those who take one of these options should enter using Gate A, B, or C, then follow the lot attendants’ directions to the drop-off area in Lot 9. Pickup will be in the same area as drop-off until it moves to Lot 5 after 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Spurs will compete in Game 5 at the Frost Bank Center at 7:30 p.m. Parking lots at the venue will become available at 3:30 p.m. and doors open at 6 p.m. Officials say congestion is expected near the property, so fans should arrive early to allow extra time for parking, security screening, and arena entry. It’s no convention, but famous faces are also expected to attend. Ben Stiller, Timothée Chalamet, Paulina Chávez, and Jerry O’Connell have been at past competitions this month.
This isn’t the first time two major events have snarled traffic in the area. Several guests of a Medina Valley High School graduation reported missing their loved ones walking the stage on Thursday, May 28, because they got stuck in the Freeman Coliseum parking line on-site. The ceremony began at 5:30 p.m., while tipoff for the Spurs Western Conference playoff game next door was scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Social media users claimed they arrived at the coliseum roughly an hour before the graduation start time, but became stuck outside the entry regardless. MySA reached out to Spacecon regarding its traffic plan, but did not hear back in time for publication.
