Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks are celebrating the 2026 NBA championship after defeating the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5.

The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90, led by Jalen Brunson (45 pts), to capture their first title since 1973 with a Game 5 victory.

Celebrate, New York City.

Jalen Brunson named Finals MVP

The Knicks’ captain was recognized with the Bill Russell Trophy and showered with cheers by the Knicks fans in attendance, who chanted his name in jubilation.

“It’s everything we dreamed of. It’s why I came to New York,” Brunson said, standing next to his father, Rick, on the stage.

‘I’m in awe’

Jalen Brunson said after winning the championship, tears in his eyes. He was speechless after Lisa Salters asked what it meant to share the moment with his father, Rick.

“Whatever you put in front of us, we’re going to find a way,” Brunson said. “Every time. Every time.”

“We’re going to find a way. Every single time we step on this court.”

They found a way to win all series. The power of connection, heart and experience shone through.

“Knick fans, this is not a dream. Your long, long wait has ended! Go ahead and cry,” ESPN’s Mike Breen said as the moment arrived. “After 53 years, your Knicks are finally NBA champions once again!”

Dylan Harper (25 pts, 5 reb) led the Spurs in scoring, but the buckets dried up late, as the rookie missed a pair of layups in the final minutes. Stephon Castle (6 pts on 1-for-10 shooting) and De’Aaron Fox (7 pts on 3-for-15 shooting) both struggled, leaving them limited, and Victor Wembanyama (19 pts, 14 reb, 5 blk) couldn’t bring them home.

None of them could match Brunson, who just kept chipping away, finding shot after shot to give the Knicks first a chance, then a title.

“An absolute masterpiece with 45 points,” said Breen of Brunson. “He will be the king of New York for the rest of his life.”

JUNE 13 / 11:25 PM

A shot to stay alive

93-90 Knicks with 8.8 remaining, as Mikal Bridges hits one of two at the line as well.

The Spurs have a chance to extend their season. They’re out of timeouts. What will Mitch Johnson draw up with everything riding on it?

JUNE 13 / 11:19 PM

The Knicks execute in the clutch

Once again, the Knicks are finding their stride with the game on the line.

Mitchell Robinson grabbed an offensive board on a missed free throw by Josh Hart, giving them another possession and potentially putting the Spurs away.

OG Anunoby made one of two at the line, pushing it to a two-possession game.

92-88 Knicks with 21.6 seconds remaining.

ABC went to break with Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” playing.

The fervor in New York City is suddenly at a fever pitch, as the Knicks are a few possessions away from a title.

JUNE 13 / 11:15 PM

Knicks on a 15-2 run

88-85 Knicks with 1:59 to go, as the Spurs have missed nine of their last 10 shots with the season hanging in the balance.

Karl-Anthony Towns just fouled out, sending Victor Wembanyama (18 pts, 14 reb) to the line for two.

With Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox struggling, the Spurs are searching for offense late in the Frost Bank Center.

JUNE 13 / 11:07 PM

Tied at 83

Jalen Brunson (40 pts) and the Knicks are at it again, coming back late to eliminate the Spurs’ lead.

— NBA (@NBA) June 14, 2026

The Knick captain just keeps grinding away. His mentality is inspiring. On a night where no one beyond Dylan Harper is shooting that well, he’s been the force driving New York.

He’s the first Knick to score 40+ in a Finals game, setting a franchise record.

JUNE 13 / 11:02 PM

Down to four

83-79 Spurs with 6:12 to go, as Jalen Brunson (36 pts) stops and starts to shake Wemby and score in the lane.

“That’s as crafty as it gets,” said Tim Legler.

De’Aaron Fox (7 pts on 3-for-11 shooting) re-enters the game for Stephon Castle (4 pts, 4 reb, 4 ast), who hasn’t been able to find his jumper all night.

The Knicks just keep pushing, no matter the circumstances.

“You can feel the anxiety and the crowd starting to rise,” said Richard Jefferson.

JUNE 13 / 10:48 PM

The threes are falling

Landry Shamet cut the lead to six with a 3-pointer, but Devin Vassell (10 pts, 6 reb, 2 3PM) responded with a long-distance shot of his own on the other end, pushing it back to 80-71 Spurs with 8:51 to go in the game.

Karl-Anthony Towns (2 pts, 9 reb) has been limited to just 18 minutes so far tonight, hamstringing the Knicks’ ability to play five-out basketball.

We saw Mikal Bridges log a few minutes as the ostensible center earlier, as Mike Brown looks for other options.

De’Aaron Fox noted at Friday’s media day that guarding five shooting threats required an additional level of discipline from the Spurs. We’ll see when Brown comes back with Towns down the stretch.

JUNE 13 / 10:41 PM

Spurs up 72-65 after 3Q

The Knicks closed the period on a 12-3 run, as the Spurs hit just a single basket in the last 2:51, to give themselves a solid chance of closing out a championship tonight.

Jalen Brunson (30 pts on 10-for-21 shooting) is the lead man for New York, while Dylan Harper (21 pts on 8-of-13 shooting) is the lead scorer for San Antonio.

The Knicks are still shooting just 32.4% from the field, but they’re hanging around, as they have all series.

“We’ve got to win, no matter what it takes,” said Harper.

JUNE 13 / 10:28 PM

Dylan Harper making waves

Harper (21 pts) has come up big with the Spurs’ season on the line. He’s preternaturally calm for a rookie, with a polished scoring games that belies his years, and a major reason the Spurs have a 24-0 lead in bench points tonight.

Every time he touches the ball, keep an eye on him. He knows where he’s going, and he knows how to take the angles to get there.

“It’s impressive,” said Richard Jefferson. “He’s been the best player for the San Antonio Spurs tonight.”

Spurs 68-53 with 3:06 to go in the quarter.

JUNE 13 / 10:10 PM

Spurs push the lead back to double digits

Julian Champagnie (14 pts, 4-for-6 3PM) is hot to start the second half, helping the Spurs earn a 51-41 lead with 9:29 to go in the third quarter.

The Brooklyn native has been a consistent factor in this series, both as a shooter and a presence on the boards.

JUNE 13 / 9:46 PM

Spurs up 42-37 at the half

An old-school score for an old-school game, as Devin Vassell (4 pts) beats the buzzer to give the Spurs a boost going into the break. It’s the lowest-scoring half of the Playoffs for New York.

The Spurs are shooting 34.1% from the field, while the Knicks are at 29.5%. This has been a physical, defensive contest, featuring four lead changes and two ties.

Jalen Brunson (16 pts) is the only Knick in double figures, as is Dylan Harper (11 pts) for the Spurs. But Victor Wembanyama (9 pts, 9 reb, 5 blk) is not far behind.

San Antonio’s earned an 18-6 advantage in points in the paint so far.

JUNE 13 / 9:33 PM

The Brunson burner is lit

Jalen Brunson (16 pts on 6-for-11 shooting) has the last eight for the Knicks, willing them back into the contest.

The Spurs have stopped doubling Brunson as aggressively, staying home on shooters and freeing him up to go on the attack.

It’s a welcome sight for the Knicks, who are still searching for offense.

38-29 Spurs with 3:15 to go in the second quarter.

JUNE 13 / 9:26 PM

The Wembanyama effect

31-18 Spurs with 7:41 to go in the second quarter.

The Knicks are shooting 6-for-27 (22.2%) from the field so far, and haven’t scored in the paint — Wemby’s closed off that completely.

Spurs lead 23-13 after one

San Antonio has a 12-0 advantage in points in the paint so far, as Victor Wembanyama (6 pts, 7 reb, 3 blk) patrols the paint.

This feels like a Game 7, not a Game 5, at the moment — both teams are on edge, with the Spurs benefitting from their athleticism and the support of the home crowd.

The San Antonio defense has been physical and active, putting pressure on the visitors. The Knicks have gotten nothing easy tonight.

Spurs’ defense locks down

18-8 Spurs with 2:30 to go in the first quarter, as they take a double-digit lead for the fifth straight game in this series.

The Knicks are shooting 2-for-19 (10.5%) from the field so far, struggling to find space against an aggressive Spurs defense.

They’re fighting for their season tonight in San Antonio.

JUNE 13 / 8:54 PM

Trading threes

Dylan Harper (3 pts) and OG Anunoby (5 pts) knock down their first 3-point looks of the evening.

Harper’s outside shot has been questioned, but he slowed down and emphasized his form on an above-the-break three, knocking it down.

On the other end, Anunoby responded with a corner 3-pointer over the outstretched arm of Victor Wembanyama, who made a lunging effort to block the shot.

OG’s at 50.6% from 3-point range in this Playoffs — he’s been lights-out.

11-8 Spurs with 5:51 to go in the first quarter.

JUNE 13 / 8:51 PM

Wembanyama at work

Victor Wembanyama (2 pts, 2 reb, 3 blk) is rejecting everything to start tonight’s contest, as the Knicks try to pick up a second foul on the superstar center.

The Finals record for blocks is 9, held by Dwight Howard (Game 4, 2009).

Keldon Johnson is on the floor for the first time — the Spurs could use a big game from the reigning Kia Sixth Man of the Year.

Spurs 6-5 with 7:49 to go in the first quarter.

The 1973 New York Knicks famously featured five future Naismith Hall of Famers — Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere and Willis Reed.

Their connectivity was legendary, featuring all-time ball movement under Red Holtzman. All five averaged in double figures during the regular season and the Playoffs, with Jerry Lucas clocking in just behind, before they upset Wilt Chamberlain and the Los Angeles Lakers in Finals.

This Knicks team is reminiscent of those champions, who brought a title home to New York more than a half-century ago.

Their chemistry and love for one another is evident, and a constant theme at Media Days.

Their team balance is elite — Brunson’s the head of the spear; Anunoby and Bridges take pressure off him; Towns and Hart hold it all together. They’re more than the sum of their parts.

The 1990s Knicks are better remembered at this point, but these Knicks have a lot of the 70s in them. We’ll see if there is championship glory in their future as well. They have their first chance at it tonight.

Get hyped for tonight’s contest with Chasing History

We’ve been following along throughout the Playoffs with our premier all-access series.

As we prepare for tonight’s Game 5, flash back through the drama and excitement of this dramatic Finals.

JUNE 13 / 11:45 AM

Keep an eye on Dylan Harper tonight

Dylan Harper of the San Antonio Spurs could be key to his team’s chances tonight in Game 5.

NBA.com’s Steve Aschburner has three things to watch in Game 5 for you, including the possibility of seeing more of incandescent rookie Dylan Harper.

“Harper, averaging 16.3 points in the Finals after 11.8 during the season, still is coming off the bench. But teammate De’Aaron Fox’s uneven play, particularly in Game 4, has some fans and media folks clamoring for minutes beyond Harper’s current 32 per.

Consider each guard’s work alongside the most important Spur so far this series:

Wembanyama and Fox have a -1.2 net rating in the four games, the Spurs scoring about 105 points per 100 possessions while giving up about 106.
Wemby and Harper are at +9.8, based on 111 points per 100 offensively and about 101 defensively.”

JUNE 13 / 11:30 AM

The Hart of the Knicks

Josh Hart has been a glue guy for the New York Knicks throughout this Playoff run, providing whatever the team needs.

NBA.com’s Jeff Zillgitt has a look at Josh Hart, the Knicks’ x-factor, as the ‘Nova Knicks take their first chance at winning the NBA championship tonight.

“Hart is realistic about who he is as a basketball player and understands the adage: ‘Be a star in your role.’

‘It takes humility and just a willingness to sacrifice,” Hart said. “We’re in the NBA Finals. There are millions of people watching. It’s easy to get wrapped up in human nature of wanting to get recognition, wanting to score the ball, wanting to show people what you can do on the biggest stage.

‘That’s not everyone’s calling and not everyone’s assignment. I know for me, that’s not really my assignment. It takes a little bit of time to find that humility. For me, I found that with prayer and my faith.’”

JUNE 13 / 11:15 AM
