Fans react as New York Knicks are crowned NBA champions for first time in decades

  • June 16, 2026

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WBNG) — The New York Knicks were crowned NBA champions for the first time since 1973 on June 13.

For many fans, the Kicks’ victory was nothing short of a miracle. Fans like Miguel Villanueva, a Vestal resident who grew up in Brooklyn, could hardly believe the team had won.

“When it finally came into fruition, to be honest, I didn’t know how to respond or react because it was something that was so out of reach for so many years. So, when it finally came, it was a dream come true,” Villanueva said.

Fans all across New York City flooded the streets on Saturday night to celebrate the Knicks’ victory, a team that has faced bad luck and mismanagement for over 50 years.

“[The scars are] not away… they’re still there because there were moments that I will never forget. So, even though… like a scar, it heals, but it’s still there. So, I still have the scars of those past times, but this win just helped those scars heal so much easier,” Villanueva said.

A celebration parade for the Knicks will take place on Thursday, June 18, in New York City, where hundreds of thousands are expected to watch.
