With the Mavericks set to leave American Airlines Center in the coming years, the question of what will happen to the Dirk Nowitzki statue outside the building remains.
The 23-foot figure of the Mavs’ all-time leading scorer has become a Dallas landmark since it was revealed on Christmas Day in 2022. Depicting Nowitzki’s iconic fade away jumper and inscribed with the words “Loyalty never fades away,” it reminds fans of better times for the franchise, which has struggled recently.
“I would guess it would move, but it might be more portable than me at this point,” joked Nowitzki, who retired in 2019.
“I haven’t really been in the Mavs loop all that much. Of course, there’s new leadership in place now and I’m sure there’s going to be more discussions over the next few months, but as of now, we haven’t had many discussions about anything.”
