After 53 Years, the Knicks win it all
The Knicks clinched the 2026 NBA Finals on June 13, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5. The victory ended a 53-year championship drought.
New York Knicks fans are one of the most passionate and historically starved fanbases in NBA history.
After enduring nearly six decades, fans were seen weeping, hugging, and spilling into the streets –clad in orange and blue — after the teams championship win.
Millions of fans flooded the streets of Manhattan in a massive ticker-tape parade — one of the largest championship celebrations in sports history.
For generational superfans like acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee, a season-ticket holder since 1985, the moment was 41 years in the making.
Lee celebrated the Knicks’ win by leaving North Carolina-born NBA legend Michael Jordan a “Mars Blackmon” voicemail saying New York was finally champion.
“Mike, it’s Mars Blackmon. We haven’t talked in a minute. The New York Knicks are world champions. Call me back! Orange and blue skies! Wassup Mike,” Lee appeared to say in social media video.
The call was fitting: Jordan and the Chicago Bulls repeatedly eliminated the Knicks in the late ’80s and ’90s, prolonging a drought that dated back to the franchise’s last title in 1973.
Canes take the Cup!
A day after the Knicks’ historic victory, the Carolina Hurricanes shook off two decades of near-misses to secure the their second NHL Stanley Cup.
The Canes’ victory ended a 20 year drought. The team hoisted and kissed the silver Cup in victory as thousands packed downtown Raleigh for the June 20 parade.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein proclaimed the summer of 2026 Stanley Cup Summer in recognition of the Carolina Hurricanes winning the Stanley Cup.
“North Carolina is hockey state!” Governor Stein exclaimed.
Hope for the Hornets?
Even the Charlotte Hornets made history, putting together a dramatic regular-season turnaround and advancing to the 2026 Play-In Tournament after a 127–126 buzzer-beater win over the Miami Heat.
Heartbreak followed with a 121–90 loss to the Orlando Magic for the eighth seed, extending the franchise’s playoff absence.
The Hornets hold the NBA’s longest active playoff drought — 11 consecutive seasons in 2026 — and have not reached the playoffs since 2016.
Still, the team finished 44–38, a 25-win improvement over the previous season, and reached the Play-In for the first time since the 2021–22 season.
With LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller joined by newcomers — including rookie Kon Knueppel alongside Miles Bridges and Moussa Diabaté — hope remains for Hornets fans.
For long-suffering fan bases, 2026 offered something rarer than a trophy: proof that droughts can end.
The last time sports saw a year this defined by drought-breaking victory was 2016. Ten years later, history appeared to repeat — sparking jubilation and renewed hope for fans across the nation.
