Quentin Grimes is reportedly moving on from the Sixers.
Grimes has agreed to a four-year, $60 million contract to join the Lakers in free agency, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Wednesday.
The Lakers are in the midst of major roster changes headlined by the news that LeBron James will play for another team next season. Along with Grimes, their reported additions include Walker Kessler, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Collin Sexton.
The Sixers acquired Grimes in a February 2025 trade with the Mavs. He returned to the Sixers last offseason after an extended restricted free agency process, accepting the team’s one-year, $8.7 million qualifying offer.
Grimes put up big numbers late in the 2024-25 season for the sorely undermanned, 24-win Sixers. He did not come close to replicating that production the following year, averaging 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists. Rookie VJ Edgecombe seized an opening-night starter spot in the Sixers’ backcourt and Grimes served as the team’s sixth man for most of the year, coming off the bench in 56 of 75 regular-season appearances.
The 26-year-old was largely quiet in the playoffs, although he did play a fantastic Game 5 of the Sixers’ first-round series against the Celtics. Grimes scored 18 points on 5-for-8 shooting in the first step of their comeback from a 3-1 series deficit.
Notably, the Sixers picked up a guard about a week before free agency. In his first draft as the Sixers’ president of basketball operations, Mike Gansey selected Alabama product Labaron Phillon Jr. with the 22nd pick.
With Grimes leaving, the current guards on the Sixers’ roster are the youthful trio of 25-year-old Tyrese Maxey, 20-year-old Edgecombe and the 20-year-old Philon.
“We’re going to have to get another ball handler, too,” Gansey said after drafting Philon. “You can’t just rely on a rookie point guard.”
The Sixers’ first two free-agent deals were frontcourt players in forward Dean Wade and center Ariel Hukporti.
