Alright, let’s get right to it without being cute in Belgium’s two dominant languages (German is also official there). Anyway, good evening and happy Independence Day Eve!

The France men’s national basketball team defeated the Belgium men’s national team 80-72 in Antwerp, Belgium on Saturday evening at Lotto Arena for the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in Group G for FIBA Europe. Bilal Coulibaly led Les Bleus with 13 points and 2 rebounds. He also got the start.

Les Bleus never trailed in the road match against the Lions, who were led by Manu Lecomte, who scored 17 points. The Belgians made a run in the third quarter but let’s be honest. The Lions have no NBA players. The French had multiple ones, including the Washington Wizards guard who was his team’s first round draft pick in 2023.

Rudy Gobert also had 8 points and 11 rebounds for France.

The French now have 9 points in the standings for Group G, tied with Finland. Speaking of which, Les Bleus will play the Finns next Monday in Pau, France. And no, Pau is NOT named after Pau Gasol, who is NOT French.

Finally, so you know, France (and Finland) qualified for the second round of the World Cup Qualifiers. Belgium, who is last place, is out given that they are last place in Group G. Hungary was the third place team in the group.
