The Houston Rockets are eyeing an even bigger leap after a breakthrough 2025-26 campaign. The latest update from injured playmaker Fred VanVleet also suggests one of their most important pieces could be back pretty soon. While attending the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, the veteran point guard offered an encouraging assessment of his recovery. VanVleet said expressed confidence that he will be ready when the 2026-27 campaign tips off.

“I’m getting stronger, getting better. So, it’s a slow process,” VanVleet said. “I’m eager and ready to get back out there. But I’ve got to follow protocols. So, I should be good for the start of the season. Just getting stronger, trying to get the leg back right. Long days, two-a-days. But we’ve got a great rehab team with the training staff here with the Rockets. I’m ready to get back out on the court.”

The update is welcome news for a Houston team that won 52 games and claimed the fifth seed in the Western Conference despite losing its veteran floor general. With Houston continuing to build around Kevin Durant and the emerging core led by Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun, VanVleet’s expected return gives head coach Ime Udoka another proven playmaker and defensive leader.

VanVleet’s NBA journey remains one of the league’s best success stories. After going undrafted out of Wichita State in 2016, he earned his opportunity through Summer League before becoming an integral part of the Toronto Raptors’ 2019 championship team. He later made franchise history with a 54-point performance and earned his first All-Star selection in 2022. Since signing with Houston in 2023, VanVleet has provided veteran leadership, perimeter defense, and championship experience.
