ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Atlanta Hawks guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker spent time giving back to the community this week, hosting a youth basketball camp for more than 200 kids in 1st through 8th grade at Parkview High School.
The camp marked Alexander-Walker’s first year running the event. He says he hopes it becomes an annual tradition.
“It’s cool to see joy on kids’ faces and to be a source of that… is a blessing in and of itself,” Alexander-Walker said. “To be able to go back in time and be a kid again and partake in games and the learning of basketball… and just getting to have the chance to teach it. I definitely want to do it again.”
Alexander-Walker also reflected on last season and what the Hawks were able to build with new additions, pointing to the value of postseason experience — especially falling to the eventual champions.
“If you’re going to lose, it better be worth it,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of lessons… It’s reassuring to go into the summer — you go back to the lab, you get better — and you know that you’re working with something… it’s just momentum.”
That momentum now includes three new rookies from this year’s draft class. Alexander-Walker said he’s already reached out and likes what he’s seen.
“They’re really good guys. Got to text them a few, and watched them a bit in the Summer League,” he said. “I’m excited [to see] how they’ll mesh… It’s just more assets to have and it’s going to help us in the future.”
Alexander-Walker has momentum of his own. He won the award for Most Improved Player.
