The Houston Rockets will begin their 2026-27 campaign in the National Basketball Association in three months’ time—their 60th season as a franchise in the league. For Rockets fans, a longtime writer and reporter from a neighboring state will now make Houston his new full-time beat.
On Monday, The Athletic’s Will Guillory announced on social media that he will begin covering the Rockets after a 10-year run covering the New Orleans Pelicans. Guillory, a New Orleans native and University of New Orleans alum, covered the Pelicans for two seasons with the New Orleans before transitioning to the New York Times-owned company for Pelicans coverage for the past eight seasons.
This past NBA season, Guillory split time covering the Pelicans and the Rockets, including postseason coverage against the Los Angeles Lakers.
“I’m extremely excited and grateful to begin this next phase in my career,” Guillory told Chron. “Houston is an amazing city. Last year, I got a glimpse of just how passionate the fanbase is around the Rockets. Can’t wait to meet more Houston fans/readers and become a member of the community.”
Guillory fills a void for the company left behind by Kelly Iko, who now covers the NBA nationally for Yahoo! Sports. Guillory noted on social media that he’ll still occasionally provide reporting updates on the Pelicans throughout the season.
“You can take the man out of New Orleans, but you can’t take the New Orleans out of this man,” Sergio Gonzalez, The Athletic’s Editorial Director, said on social media to Guillory. “To more great things ahead for you.”
