LeBron James wanted to ‘leave memories where they were’ with Heat

LeBron James finally made his free agent decision— after nearly four weeks of waiting— and it wasn’t the Miami Heat.

The Heat, along with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors, all got burned in James’ waiting game just to ultimately shock the world in signing with the Philadelphia 76ers for a two-year $8 million deal.

Following Miami’s Giannis Antetokounmpo acquisition, a James free agent addition would have instantly doubled down on the team’s title aspirations next season. To add a player of that caliber at a veteran minimum price tag would have been huge. But instead it’s the rival Sixers who pull off this new super team era with James alongside Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey.

The Heat had a compelling pitch for LeBron James:

ESPN’s Shams Charania iterated that Miami was in this until the day of his decision— noting that the Heat presented a “compelling pitch” to add the star.

Miami could have formed a new Big 3 of Antetokounmpo, James and Bam Adebayo, along with arguably the greatest coach in the league in Erik Spoelstra. They still had intriguing depth pieces to surround them. The story, history and legacy fit was there, as the front office and staff remains with the same core and stability from James’ original Heat tenure back in 2010-2014. Living in South Florida would have just been an added bonus to all of this.

At the end of the day, James felt that Philadelphia presented a better chance to win a championship than this Heat team.

Rich Paul revealed that he thought LeBron was going to choose Miami.

According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, she stated that she spoke to James’ agent Rich Paul on this decision. And Paul revealed that for a long time throughout these past few weeks, he thought James was indeed set on returning to the Heat— but explained the thought process in ultimately deciding against it.

“I spoke to Rich Paul about that (turning down Miami) about an hour ago. He said for a lot of the time he thought it was going to end up being Miami.”

“That seemed to be a nice fit and story but he said ‘when you been to a place before, when you won at a place before, if you go back it may not be the same.’ You kind of want to leave those memories where they were, as they are. They had a great time together when they won two titles down in Miami.”

It evidently seemed like the Heat had a real shot at pulling off this reunion. James is responsible for two of the franchise’s three championships, in which he earned Finals MVP in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013.

Instead, now Miami will have to battle against their former superstar in a loaded Eastern Conference— as the focus now shifts to finally filling out the rest of their 2026-27 roster this summer.
