ATLANTA, Ga. (ATL Live) – The Atlanta Hawks and State Farm are bringing back their largest service initiative of the year, aiming to pack one million meals for local residents facing food insecurity.
The sixth annual Million Meal Pack event will take place on Saturday, September 26, at State Farm Arena. Organizers are looking for more than 5,000 volunteers to fill five 90-minute shifts throughout the day to meet the meal-packing goal.
According to data from the Atlanta Community Food Bank, one in eight Georgians experiences food insecurity, including one in six children. The meals assembled during this event will be distributed to local hunger relief organizations to help families throughout the metro area.
Alexis Roe, Vice President of Community Impact for the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena, stopped by ATL Live to discuss the logistics of the event. Volunteers who participate will receive a free commemorative t-shirt and are invited to attend the State Farm Street Fest, a post-volunteer celebration featuring games, food, and music along State Farm Drive.
Over the last five events, more than 26,000 community members have packed a combined total of 5.1 million meals.
