Former Brooklyn Nets guard Dennis Smith Jr. has been trying to work his way back into the NBA ever since he last played for the team during the 2023-24 season. Even though the 2025 NBA Finals are happening, Smith is still on his game to get back into the league and another Eastern Conference is trying to experience what he did for Brooklyn most recently.

Smith is working out for the Philadelphia 76ers as he tries to get his way back into the league, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Smith, per Pompey, was one of several participants at the workout, which was part of the two-day veteran minicamp that the team was having just a few weeks ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft that begins on June 25.

Smith, 27, averaged 6.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game while shooting 43.5% from the field and 29.4% from three-point land during the 2023-24 campaign. While Smith played some solid minutes for Brooklyn coming off the bench as a backup guard during that season, he wasn’t able to parlay that into another contract for the following season.

To begin the season, Smith played overseas for Real Madrid as he was trying to keep himself busy until the NBA came calling or potentially looking for someone to add depth to a team in need. NBA insider Chris Haynes reported in February that Smith left Real Madrid so that he could be ready for an opportunity in the league if a team was looking for help.

Following the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, there was a chance that Smith could have come back to Brooklyn, but it’s possible that the Nets did not bring him back given that he was looking for a multi-year deal, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. Smith is a player that can produce for any team in the league as a guard coming off the bench so it’s possible that the 76ers see his value as well.
