ELLISVILLE, Miss. (WDAM) – College basketball player Ashton Magee hosted his second annual youth basketball camp at South Jones High School, drawing more than 100 kids from across the Pine Belt.
Dozens of high school coaches and several college players helped lead drills throughout the day. The camp focused on building a strong foundation through fundamentals.
Community roots drive the camp’s mission
Magee, a South Jones graduate and current player for Mississippi State, said the event is about more than basketball.
“It means a lot because a lot of these kids are chasing the same dream I was when I was younger, and it was always a dream of mine to give back,” Magee said. “Being able to see the smiles on these kids’ faces all day — it’s really a dream come true. I always dreamed of being able to give back to my community and the kids that’s out there and giving to the next generation. So that’s for sure a highlight.”
High school coach Rashidi McCormick said the camp carries meaning for those who returned to help.
“It’s humbling — just inspiring that he can impact the community that way,” McCormick said. “And for me myself coming back and helping, it’s a privilege.”
