Zion Williamson is eligible to sign a contract extension with the New Orleans Pelicans this offseason, but the organization is reportedly unlikely to make him an offer ahead of the star of the 2026-27 campaign.

According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, New Orleans still believes in the former No. 1 overall pick but wants to see him put together another complete season before making a new long-term commitment.

“With two years remaining on his deal, Zion is eligible for an extension this offseason, but it’s highly unlikely that he will get one,” Siegel wrote.

“Even though the Pelicans still believe in the former No. 1 pick, they are in no rush to lock him into a new deal and want to see him put together another complete season after playing in 62 games a season ago.”

Pelicans remain cautious about long-term commitment

Williamson’s current deal includes multiple non-guaranteed clauses, providing New Orleans with additional protection because of the uncertainty that has surrounded his availability.

“It would be a major surprise to many around the NBA if Zion received an extension offer from the Pels,” Siegel added.

Williamson remains under contract for two more seasons, allowing New Orleans to continue evaluating his health, consistency, and production without immediately making another long-term commitment.

Williamson completed productive 2025-26 season

Williamson played 62 games, including 55 starts, during the 2025-26 campaign. He averaged 21.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.0 steal in 29.7 minutes per game.

The 26-year-old remained highly efficient offensively, shooting 60.0% from the field while averaging only 13.0 attempts per contest.

Despite his improved availability and production, the Pelicans reportedly want Williamson to prove that he can remain consistently healthy for another full campaign before discussing a new contract.
