Ebuka Okorie makes surprise visit at WMUR, meets teens from hometown

Mike CroninMANCHESTER, N.H. —

On Tuesday, Nashua native and Detroit Pistons first-round draft pick Ebuka Okorie made a surprise visit at the WMUR studio.

Okorie was drafted 17th overall by the Pistons in June, making him the highest draft pick ever from New Hampshire.

As Okorie was at WMUR, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua was also at the studio to help put together backpacks from the “Pack a Pack” drive.

The kids got to meet their hero from the Gate City.

When asked about his newfound fame, Okorie said, “Yeah, it’s actually pretty cool. I’ll go out to eat, whether it’s breakfast or I’ll go out to brunch with my parents and it’ll be cool, a couple kids younger than me will just say what’s up or say they saw me getting drafted and congratulating me. So, that’s been pretty cool, but besides that I’ve really just been being myself and doing what I’ve always been doing.”

Okorie and fellow Granite Stater, New Castle’s Duncan Robinson, and the Pistons will face the Celtics in the first NBA game of the season on Oct. 20.

“I mean, it’s awesome. I mean, you couldn’t have written it any better than that, playing against Boston, my favorite team growing up. So yeah, to be able to compete against them and play against all the players I looked up to when I was younger, it’s going to be awesome,” said Okorie. “I’m going to give it my all.”
