Michael Porter Jr’s payday may be coming from someone else.
The veteran forward Porter appears to be trending towards a split from the Brooklyn Nets. Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report revealed in a video feature Tuesday that Porter and the Nets are not expected to agree to a new contract extension.
Porter, the 28-year-old former lottery pick, arrived in Brooklyn via a 2025 trade with the Denver Nuggets. He rose to the occasion for them last season, emerging as the Nets’ undisputed alpha and posting career highs of 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game.
But Porter will be entering the final year of his deal next season at $40.8 million. Porter is looking for a new long-term extension to reflect his dramatic increase in production and was recently reported to be targeting one contract number in particular.
Unfortunately though, the Nets went a miserable 20-62 even despite Porter’s stellar year. They also recently traded for another talented forward who is on an expiring contract of his own.
Porter was at least able to show off with Brooklyn what he could do as a true No. 1 option on offense. But now it seems inevitable that the Nets, instead of paying up to extend Porter, will see what they can get for him on the trade market instead.
