The new NBA season might still be some months away, but we’re starting to get details about the upcoming schedule. For Boston Celtics fans, a key note is that the team will travel to the Detroit Pistons for the NBA’s opening game of the 2026-27 season, with tip-off scheduled for 3 pm Eastern on October 20.
The tip-off time may not be ideal for an American audience; however, it will fit perfectly into the European time zone, showing that the NBA league office is taking international audiences into account with its scheduling.
It’s understandable if you’re disappointed. A potential match-up with Jaylen Brown and LeBron James was high on every Celtics fan’s list of expectations. Instead, Joe Mazzulla’s team will do battle with a squad that beat them three out of four times last season. Neither roster looks exactly the same as last season, though: the Pistons added more shooting around Cade Cunningham, and Boston decided to part ways with Jaylen Brown.
An opening-day matchup between Detroit and Boston will be a good test for both sides. For the Celtics, they’ll have an opportunity to test themselves against a team that won 60 games in the previous campaign, while Detroit will be the first team to face off against the new duo of Jayson Tatum and Paul George. The addition of Mitchell Robinson could also come into play during the game, as the veteran big man has the physicality to match up with Isaiah Stewart and the size, length and athleticism to deal with Jalen Duren.
While the Pistons have focused on adding floor spacers in recent years, they weren’t a high-volume 3-point team last season, ranking 29th in 3s attempted per game and 17th in 3-point percentage. Boston, however, will look to get shots up early and often, as we’ve become used to under Mazzulla. If both teams stick to a similar approach as last season, it will be interesting to see who can assert their style in the game.

Detroit spent most of last season implementing its will onto opponents. Yet, with Tatum back in the rotation and some additional depth across key areas, Detroit won’t have the same advantages this time around. Still, it’s worth remembering that opening night is rarely full of elite-level hoops. Both teams will be rusty and will likely approach the game looking to gather data and feel each other out.
Nevertheless, the Celtics will be the team under the most pressure to perform on opening day. After parting with Brown, all eyes will be on how fluid the Celtics look, especially with George on the floor. Detroit won’t be an easy test for Boston, but in an ever-improving Eastern Conference, what team is?
