SAN ANTONIO — The year prior to Victor Wembanyama’s arrival, the NBA handed the San Antonio Spurs a total of four national TV games during the 2022-23 season.
Three of those games were shown only on NBA TV, and the final one — an ESPN matchup against the Golden State Warriors on Jan. 13 — came five weeks before 2023 All Star Weekend in Salt Lake City. After that, only local broadcasts showcased the 22-60 Spurs.
After that season, San Antonio hoped for some luck in the NBA Draft Lottery in hopes of landing Wembanyama. Once it drafted him, it hasn’t been able to leave the spotlight.
Wednesday morning, the NBA continued rolling out key dates in the 2026-27 campaign ahead of its full regular season schedule release after announcing both its opening week and Christmas Day slates on Tuesday. The Spurs, to no surprise, were featured everywhere.
The first four days of the 2026-27 NBA regular season will feature nine national games across NBC/Peacock, ESPN and Prime Video.

Mitch Johnson’s squad will begin its regular season on Oct. 20 by hosting Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Oklahoma City Thunder following a seven-game Western Conference Finals series that cemented the matchup as perhaps the league’s most exciting budding rivalry.
Three days later, the Spurs will host the Houston Rockets at Austin’s Moody Center as a quasi-home game to complement their annual “I-35 Series” in February. Both games, along with a return trip to Madison Square Garden on Christmas to face the reigning champion New York Knicks in an NBA Finals rematch, will be nationally televised.
The league didn’t stop there. Three of the Spurs’ four NBA Cup Group Play games are slated for national audiences. San Antonio is competing in West Group C against the Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Lakers.
Group Play will take place every Friday from Oct. 30-Nov. 27 and on Tuesday, Nov. 24 and Wednesday, Nov. 25. The NBA Cup Quarterfinals will be played on Dec. 4 and Dec. 5 in team markets and the NBA Cup Semifinals will be played on Dec. 8 and Dec. 9 in team markets.
The NBA Cup Final is set for Dec. 11 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

In addition to their opening week and Christmas Day draw, the Spurs will also participate in the NBA’s inaugural President’s Day quadrupleheader. They’ll face Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Miami Heat on the road at 4 p.m. Central on Feb. 15, televised on NBC/Peacock.
Per the NBA’s current TV rights agreement with its broadcast partners, teams can have a maximum of 34 games televised nationally. Last season, the Knicks, Lakers, Warriors, Thunder shared that honor; the Spurs drew 22 national TV games at the beginning of the season before several broadcast changes upped that number to 28 games around All-Star Weekend.
So far, the Spurs have already learned of nine. Beyond the games already listed, they’re also slated to represent the NBA in Europe for the second time in three seasons.
Wembanyama will return to Accor Arena in Paris against the New Orleans Pelicans on Jan. 14 before facing them again at Manchester’s Co-op Live on Jan. 17. Both of those games will be televised on Prime at 1 p.m. and 9:30 a.m. Central, respectively.

The NBA will release the remainder of its 2026-27 regular season schedule at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Based on the attention the Spurs have already received, it remains a high possibility they replace or join the list of teams with 34 national TV games.
In Wembanyama’s rookie season, that number sat at 19 — a huge jump from the four San Antonio drew during the 2022-23 season. Now, 34 might seem a little low.
