Following Russell Westbrook’s retirement from basketball, Felton argued that his former teammate remains the greatest and most beloved player Oklahoma City has ever had, even with Kevin Durant’s legacy and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s recent success.
Westbrook announced his retirement after 18 NBA seasons, finishing his career as the league’s all-time leader with 209 triple-doubles.
“Now that he’s retired, I guarantee you – may not happen this season, but it may – next season, retire his jersey and a statue,” Felton said on To The Baha podcast.
“He is stamped in OKC, bro. The best player, the favorite.”
Felton puts Westbrook ahead of SGA
Gilgeous-Alexander has rapidly strengthened his own case as the greatest player in Thunder history.
He led Oklahoma City to the 2025 NBA championship and has since won consecutive MVP awards, becoming just the 14th player in NBA history to claim the honor in back-to-back seasons.
Felton, who spent the 2017-18 season alongside Westbrook in Oklahoma City, said he is a major fan of SGA but still doesn’t see him surpassing Westbrook in the franchise hierarchy.
“Listen, y’all know how I feel about Shai, I love Shai,” Felton said. “Shai is number two. I think he will always be number two.”
For Felton, Westbrook’s connection to Oklahoma City and his loyalty to the organization separate him from the other Thunder greats.
“What Russ did in OKC, you got to understand, he built that,” Felton continued. “There was no team in OKC. Russ built that, he built the winning culture, he stayed loyal, he stayed down with the fans.
“Russell Westbrook will be the all-time favorite Thunder player ever.”
Westbrook was part of the franchise from its first season in Oklahoma City in 2008-09 and spent 11 seasons with the Thunder.
Alongside Durant and James Harden, he helped Oklahoma City reach the 2012 NBA Finals.
After Durant left for the Golden State Warriors in 2016, Westbrook stayed and produced his historic 2016-17 MVP campaign, averaging 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists while becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double for an entire season.
Westbrook also remains the Thunder’s all-time leading scorer with 18,859 points.
Durant, meanwhile, won the 2014 MVP award during his Oklahoma City tenure and was the leading scorer on the Thunder team that reached the 2012 Finals.
SGA has since accomplished something neither Westbrook nor Durant managed in Oklahoma City by leading the Thunder to an NBA championship.
