Former Cavaliers guard Matthew Dellavedova recently recalled the difficulty of guarding Stephen Curry.Dellavedova was hospitalized for severe cramping after Game 3 of the 2015-16 NBA Finals.The Cavaliers defeated the Warriors in that series, but Golden State won the next two Finals matchups.Dellavedova now plays for the Sydney Kings in Australia.
Just over 11 seasons ago, the Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2014-15 NBA Finals, winning the series in six games. Recently, former Cavaliers guard Matthew Dellavedova opened up about his battles with the Warriors and, more specifically, his troubles guarding former two-time MVP Stephen Curry.
“I mean, obviously it’s like an impossible task chasing Steph around. He never gets tired,” said Dellavedova.
The Australian guard also shared that following Game 3, he needed to be hospitalized, saying, “I’m just in a world of hurt. Then they like carry me and put me in the ice bath up to like here, and I’m just sitting there, and slowly the cramps kind of go away. And then we only had 1 day between the games. And so I think Steve and the doctor were like, “Yeah, your best shot at getting ready for the next game is going to the hospital and just getting an IV overnight.”
After taking the 2014-15 title, Curry and Golden State would lose to the Cavaliers in the 2015-16 Finals. However, the Warriors would get their revenge, beating Cleveland in the next two NBA Finals, going a combined 8-1. As for Dellavedova, he wasn’t around to hound Curry following the 2015-16 season, joining the Milwaukee Bucks.
Currently, Dellavedova is still active and plays with the Sydney Kings in Australia under assistant coach Andrew Bogut, a 2014-15 NBA champion with Golden State.
