OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – For the eighth year, Creighton University hosted its annual Abilities Camp on Friday, welcoming children with special needs across three locations: D.J. Sokol Arena, the McDermott Center and the Ruth Scott Center.
About 100 children ages 6 to 13 participated in the event, which was led by Bluejay men’s and women’s basketball players and coaches, along with Creighton physical therapy students.
The camp held personal significance for two Creighton players — sophomore guard Ty Davis and senior guard Josh Dix, a transfer from Iowa — who each had a family member in attendance. Dix’s brother and Davis’ cousin took part in the activities.
“My brother attended — obviously being from Council Bluffs, it’s pretty close,” Dix said. “He shot some baskets, dribbled around a little bit. He was having fun. They don’t get the same opportunities as everyone all the time, so just for them to come out here and have fun with people, it’s a great time.”
Davis’ cousin flew in from Tennessee for the second year in a row for the camp.
“Growing up with a cousin who has Down syndrome, it’s cool to see,” Davis said. “This makes their year. This makes their months. He talks about this all the time, so it’s honestly a blessing just to see him having so much fun out here with all the other campers.”
