Spurs star Victor Wembanyama blocked Nuggets MVP NIkola Jokic twice in a row in a friendly before the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.

Several NBA stars will be competing overseas in the 2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers as the NBA offseason continues. Among them are San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama, playing for his native France, while Denver Nuggets MVP Nikola Jokic suits up for Serbia.

The two stars have already squared off once in a friendly before the tournament, and that continued on Sunday, when Wembanyama got the better of Jokic twice in rapid succession during an epic sequence of play.

The wild play occurred in the first quarter, with France having taken an early lead over Serbia by a score of 12-7.

Wembanyama made some headlines recently for his poor play down the stretch of a loss for France, with his late-game three-point heave that came up short conjuring up memories of some of his play toward the end of games in the Spurs’ NBA Finals loss against the New York Knicks two months ago.

While Wembanyama is undeniably the most freakish talent in the game today, some fans are hoping that he takes the next step in his development this year by eliminating or severely limiting those difficult moving threes from his shot diet.

Clearly, defending the rim is still not an issue for the former number one overall draft pick.

Meanwhile, Jokic and the Nuggets have had a disappointing offseason, recently losing Peyton Watson in a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers that brought them back an underwhelming return, at best. The Nuggets haven’t advanced past the second round since winning the championship three years ago, and Jokic is coming off one of the worst playoff performances of his career last season vs the Minnesota Timberwolves.

In any case, the Nuggets and Spurs will start their respective seasons in less than two months.
