CLAREMORE, Okla. — Claremore’s most iconic and fashionable skeleton has donned OKC Thunder gear to cheer on the team in the NBA Finals.

Skully the skeleton and his companion skeleton dog Bones are well-known in Claremore for their seasonal outfits.

Skully and Bones stand guard over the home of the Spencers in Claremore who explain how the tradition of dressing Skully up began.

“We bought him for Halloween last year,” said Claremore resident Madison Spencer. “He went on sale in July and I was at work and I happened to see it. I was like, ‘oh, I have to get this!’ I didn’t even tell him, so I just ordered it. We got it; it was super exciting. We put it up, did not expect to keep it up year round and we were like what are we supposed to do with it?”

Madison’s husband Baleigh Spencer explained that because Skully is about 12 feet tall he was a little too large to keep in the attic until next Halloween, so the couple decided to decorate him year round.

“All the inspiration for this is to really just make people smile. It’s super fun to do it with our son and the reactions we get from the whole community, it’s super fun,” said Baleigh.

From dressing up for Christmas as the Grinch, a rabbit for Easter, a graduate in May and even a gator wrangler, Skully and Bones have cycled through a variety of fun costumes.

Now, they’re wearing OKC Thunder orange and blue to cheer the team on as they play against the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Finals.

Baleigh explained, “The Oklahoma City theme really stems from this flag right here we got from Spectrum Paint here in Claremore. Spectrum Paint gave us this flag to use and so we went with a whole Thunder theme and just made it a Thunder theme for the finals. We hope the Thunder can win.”

According to the Spencers, many of Skully’s costumes are handmade, including his OKC Thunder outfit.

“What we do is we buy the shirts and the shorts blank,” said Madison. “He wears a 6XL shirt and then we have a business called Duck Duck Goose Tees LLC where we do our own hats and our shirts and everything so we were able to make it, make the shirt and the shorts, ourselves.”

After cheering on the Thunder, the Spencers said they plan to celebrate Independence Day in a fun way.

“We actually have a scavenger hunt for the 4th of July that we’ve already got a lot of sponsors for, so we’re excited for that,” Madison said. “It’s a bunch of different local companies that we’re going to hide inside of different packages and it’s things from like hair cuts to just Freshies, some of our gear from our Duck Duck Goose. There’s all kinds of stuff in there.”

Madison said they’ll be posting hints for the scavenger hunt on Skully’s Facebook page.
