Walter Clayton Jr. Predicted to Team Up With Rising Superstar in Latest NBA Mock Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Walter Clayton Jr. may not be leaving the state of Florida anytime soon.

In Kyle Boone’s latest NBA Mock Draft, the University of Florida standout is projected to go 25th overall to the Orlando Magic. This potential pairing keeps Clayton in-state and brings his scoring punch to a team that has shown promise but still needs help on the offensive end around Paolo Banchero.

Boone writes, “I like the idea of Orlando keeping him in Florida and asking him to be a sparkplug for its offense.” Clayton’s scoring ability is well established. With 18.3 points per game and nearly 39% from three, he’s considered a reliable offensive weapon.

Orlando’s offense, ranked 14th out of 16 playoff teams, lacked consistent shot creation last season. Clayton’s arrival could add bench scoring and long-range shooting. Two things the team has been seeking. His playstyle complements Banchero’s ability to draw defensive attention and create space.

Staying in Florida also adds continuity to Clayton’s development. His familiarity with the region and style of play may aid his transition to the NBA. While some evaluators differ on his ceiling, his shot-making is rarely questioned.

While some scouts remain divided on his long-term upside, there’s general agreement on his ability to get buckets at the next level. For a team looking to improve its offensive consistency, Clayton might be the right kind of gamble, especially this late in the first round.

If Orlando does go this route, it wouldn’t just be a convenient hometown pick. It could also be a smart basketball decision.
