An independent investigation uncovered a network of business arrangements involving Kawhi Leonard, corporate partners, and the franchise’s handling of salary-cap rules.
The National Basketball Association has imposed harsh sanctions on the Los Angeles Clippers following an independent investigation. The inquiry uncovered systematic violations of league rules and attempts to circumvent the salary cap.

According to the investigation, the club, with the involvement of corporate partners – Aspiration Partners, Boeing Wireless, Daktronics, and Lockton Insurance – created opportunities for forward Kawhi Leonard to enter into endorsement deals in exchange for his cooperation with the team.
In addition, the Clippers covered the basketball player’s personal expenses and failed to inform the league about improper offers made by his former business manager, Dennis Robertson.
What sanctions were imposed on the Clippers and Steve Ballmer
The club was stripped of its rights to five consecutive first-round draft picks, beginning in 2029. The Los Angeles Clippers must also pay a $30 million fine and remain under enhanced NBA supervision for five years.
Team owner Steve Ballmer was barred for one year from all events and activities related to the club and the league. One of the grounds for the decision was that he failed to ensure that the organization had proper safeguards in place to comply with NBA rules prohibiting attempts to circumvent the salary cap.
Kawhi Leonard himself, a two-time NBA champion and two-time Finals MVP, must pay the league $700,000. Through his agent, Harrison Gaines, he said he was unaware of anyone’s involvement in attempts to circumvent the salary-cap rules.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver condemned the scale of the violations, as well as systemic shortcomings in the operation of the club and its leadership. He emphasized that the severity of the punishment reflects the seriousness of the findings.
The NBA and the players’ union confirmed that the sanctions are final and cannot be appealed by either side. The investigation was conducted by the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.
As a result, the case has become one of the harshest punishments in NBA history for violations of the salary-cap rules and will have long-term sporting and financial consequences for the Clippers.
