While they added many young and exciting pieces alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, the Lakers also acquired some needed veteran presence.
One of those players is former long-time Golden State Warriors center and NBA champion Kevon Looney.
Though his voice is expected to be an important factor in the locker room, Looney already sees extraordinary leadership from their superstar Luka Doncic that he believes can do a lot for this new Lakers team.
Speaking with ESPN L.A., Looney praised Luka for the preseason minicamp in Slovenia and his overall leadership, saying the team will be ready to run through a wall for him in the upcoming season.
“I mean, I’ve been in the league for a while and that’s my first time doing something like that,” Looney said. “Going to somebody’s home country, bringing all of us out there and spending that much time together, I never did that before. So that just shows his character, that he really wants to win.”
“He wants people to know his background, why he is the way he is and I think he did a good job of that. He’s a great player and a great leader, and he likes to show what he can do on the court. And we got to see his personal life off the court, so we’re going to run through a wall for him.”
Doncic hosted Lakers in Slovenia
Last month, Luka hosted almost the entire Lakers roster for a private offseason minicamp in Slovenia.
The gathering was designed to combine basketball work with team bonding before Los Angeles begins official preparations for the 2026-27 NBA season.
Besides on-court training sessions, Doncic also organized several activities away from the court. The Lakers’ itinerary included a visit to Bled, fishing, golf, meals at some of Luka’s favorite places, and other activities intended to help the new-look roster build chemistry.
Doncic reportedly arranged a chartered flight for a large group of Lakers players and prepared Slovenian-themed gifts for his teammates as part of the trip.
