HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – WYMT has learned that former Knox Central Boys Basketball head coach Mitchell Madden has died, following a battle with cancer.
During his two seasons as the Panthers head coach, Madden led the program to a 43-18 record, two appearances in the 13th Region tournament and one 51st District Championship in 2024. He stepped down after the 2024-2025 season to focus on his health and his battle with cancer.
Prior to his time at Knox Central, Madden led the Oneida Baptist Institute Boys Basketball team from 2022-23 and the Jackson County Girls Basketball team in the 2010-11 season.
He guided the Mountaineers to an 11-21 record and the Lady Generals to a 13-17 record.
Programs throughout the region have shown their support to Madden and his loved ones.
“The North Laurel Basketball family sends our deepest condolences, love and prayers to the family, friends, players and all of those whose lives were touched by Coach Mitchell Madden,” said North Laurel High School Boys Basketball via a facebook post.
South Laurel Boys Basketball also shared a post, saying “Prayers for Coach Mitchell Madden and family.”
Corbin Boys basketball released a message via a facebook post, stating “Please join us in praying for the family and players of Coach Mitchell Madden as they navigate this hard time. WE extend our deepest condolences.”
