Stephen Curry has spent his career making shots that sometimes seem impossible and, because of his extraordinary efficiency, almost mechanical. At Tsinghua High School in Beijing, however, he finally encountered a machine prepared to shoot beside him.
The robot entered the gym singing as Curry watched with a mixture of surprise and amusement. It then moved toward the court, raised the ball and began taking shots alongside the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers.

The students cheered as basketball and technology came together in a completely unexpected contest. It was not really Curry against the robot. Instead, Steph simply enjoyed the technological spectacle, studied its movements and allowed the machine to briefly become the star.

The entertaining scene was only the beginning of a visit centered on something much more personal. Curry arrived at the school on September 10 to give more than 200 students what organizers described as their “first physical education class of the new school year.”
It was the first stop of his 2026 China tour following the announcement of a long-term partnership between Curry Brand and Chinese sportswear company Li-Ning. Instead of beginning the trip with a product presentation or exclusive event, Curry started inside a school gym, surrounded by young players who dream of improving.
His message addressed the doubts many young athletes carry before they ever step onto a major court.
“Height, talent and background are not limitations,” Curry told the students. “Passion and perseverance are the answer. Anything is possible.”
Those words sounded familiar because they reflected his own story. Curry entered the NBA surrounded by questions about his size, strength and ability to hold his own against bigger players. He responded by changing the way basketball is played and showing an entire generation that limitations do not always have the final word.
One of the most emotional moments involved Li Ruoxin, a girls’ basketball coach at the school. Ten years earlier, she had watched Curry from the stands as a student. This time, she stood beside him as a coach responsible for inspiring another generation.
Curry also honored the school’s basketball teachers during the visit, which coincided with Teachers’ Day in China. School officials later named him an honorary basketball advisor, giving the afternoon a meaning that extended far beyond the robot and its shots. The technology made the students laugh and cheer, but Curry gave them something more lasting.
The robot demonstrated what programming and innovation can accomplish. Curry reminded them what belief, repetition and years of perseverance can build in a human being.
