The Boston Celtics are reportedly still looking to improve their roster with less than a month until the preseason begins.
The Celtics are reportedly interested in signing point guard Devin Carter, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.
Carter, 24, was reportedly waived by the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. The Hawks had acquired him and a 2033 second-round draft pick from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for the draft rights to 30-year-old Alpha Kaba in June.
If Carter goes unclaimed and becomes a free agent, Atlanta would be responsible for paying his $5.2 million salary for the 2026-27 season.
Carter, a point guard, would be quite the low-risk addition for Boston if they indeed landed the Providence College product. The organization would likely be able to sign him to a team-friendly deal and allow him to prove himself ahead of the regular season.
Carter’s offensive game leaves much to be desired — he averaged 6.4 points per game, a 40.1 field goal percentage, and a 27.4 3-point percentage in his first two seasons (74 games).
However, Carter’s defensive prowess stands out. He averaged 2.7 rebounds per game and 0.7 steals per game between 2024-26. He brings the type of energy and toughness the Celtics thrive on defensively and love from guards; Carter could be an excellent backcourt backup to Derrick White.
Carter is a local kid, too, which is always a fun storyline to follow in Boston sports. He played two seasons for the Providence Friars (2022-24) before being drafted by Sacramento No. 13 overall in 2024. The Miami, Florida, native was named to the Big East All-Tournament team and won the conference’s scoring title (21.4 points per game in 20 league contests) in 2024.
Before his time with Providence, Carter graduated from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, in 2021. He also played for the South Carolina Gamecocks for the 2021-22 season before transferring to PC.
Two years after exiting New England for the West Coast, it seems like a return to Carter’s roots in his third NBA season is a possibility.
